Christian Perez is recognized as one of the top darts players in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia and has gathered recognitions in worldwide darts competitions but this Marbel man remains as one of the most humble athletes around.
Ian, 34, grew up in the neighborhood of Bagacay in Barangay GPS. “I grew up there and I am growing my own family there now”, said Ian, a father to a 4 year old boy he calls Titan and married to a Marbelenia.
“I started to throw pins in high school but started to compete in university competitions in college”, he said. He gradually made his way to worldwide competitions since then.
Ian had been to different parts of Asia and Europe to compete. He represented the country to the PDC World Cup of Darts in 2012 and made it to the finals of the Soft Tip World Championship in the same year. He didn’t get the top spot in the said competitions but in October 2013, he bagged the championship crown in the third Soft Tip Dartslive event in Hong Kong. The following year, he emerged the champion in the South Asian Qualifier for the 2015 World Championship.
“I’ve been to Germany thrice, London once and most of my travels for the games are in Asia.” I used to do side trips in my travels while competing but when I started a family, I focused more on the competitions and less on the leisure. I become more inspired to play and always excited to go home.”
He got the crown as the champion for the following events:
PDC World South Asian Qualifying Event- 2014
Soft Tip Dartslive Hong Kong -2013
PDC World Philippines Qualifying Event – 2009, 2011
Other Best Major results for Ian’s career include:
PDC World Championships in 2010 and 2012 – within the top 65
PDC World cup of Darts 2012 – within the top 25
I met him at the airport while he was on his way to Malaysia (for the nth time) for another darting gig. After having breakfast together I asked if I can take his portraits under the warm morning sun. He gave me a thumbs up!
